Ghost bat
Macroderma gigas NT, Northern Territory, Top End
Ghost bats are the largest 'microbat' in Australia. With a wingspan up to around 70cm, they are closer in size to a fruit bat than a more typical microbat. The difference is, ghost bats roost in caves and are predators, with no interest in fruit. Ghost bats are sadly very rare and declining in their remaining range in the Northern Territory so we are very fortunate to have recently discovered several roosts on and around our property.
