Light-Mantled Sooty Albatross
Phoebetria palpebrata
A light-mantled sooty albatross in flight is one of the most graceful spectacles the animal kingdom has to offer. Their immense tapered wings barely seem to move as they navigate the airways, occasionally skimming the water with their wingtips. This image was taken on Christmas Day, 2019 from the high cliffs of Enderby Island, one of the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands.
