Freshwater Moray Eel

These stunning eels are the only moray known to inhabit freshwater. They are smaller than their marine cousins—reaching around 1.2m in length. Moray eels are unique in possessing a mobile second (pharyngeal) jaw, used to grip prey after the initial bite, and then to pull it down their gullet. In Australia these eels are known only from lower reaches of rivers and creeks between Cairns and Bloomfield, cohabiting with sharks and crocodiles. Observing this species in the wild is there-fore a tricky endeavor requiring careful planning and risk management.
