Flat-shelled turtles (Chelodina steindachneri) inhabit the most arid environments of any Australian freshwater turtles, ranging far into the interior of the Pilbara region. It took a huge search effort and a bunch of night time snorkelling sessions to find these guys in water that allowed for photography, most sites we tried were either too deep and murky or too full of algal blooms... this site was comparitively crystal clear! Living in Darwin adds the constant subconscious worry of crocodiles into the equation - even when we know we're well outside their range, this always make night time swimming a bit jumpy!
