Smooth knob-tailed gecko

This Smooth knob-tail gecko is perhaps the most familar species in the genus Nephrurus, a genus unique and endemic to Australia. As well as having unique tails this genus is interesting for its members large head and body size and ability to predate small vertebrates - inculding other geckos! This species ranges widely throught the arid regions of the country where it can be found at night roaming over open terrain. Three N. levis subspecies are currently recognised, this fellow is a Nephrurus levis levis, found and photographed on the edge of the Simpson desert.
