Perentie

This velociraptor-like head belongs to a Perentie (Varanus giganteus), Australia's largest and the world's fourth largest lizard capable of reaching around 2.4 metres in length. This fine specimen was on the larger end of the scale at around 2m length and with quite some bulk to it. My wife and I came accross it late one cloudy day in the northern Pilbara whilst exploring a remote gorge on foot - we quickly decided this guy was the ruler of the gorge! Photos were taken just before we lost the usable light. It's always an amazing experience encountering such large lizards, the confidence they sometimes exhibit allows careful observers to approach very closely and look right into those intellegent eyes.
