Common brushtail possum
Whenever I decide to photograph a specific species, it's never easy, even when it's the local neighbourhood possums! After having seen several possums with youngsters hanging off their backs lately I decided it was time to find one of these cute duos with my camera in hand, sadly that night was the first fairly possumless night I've had in a long time! The funny thing was that there was a very well fed looking possum hanging out over my drive when I got home - of course it scampered into the dense vegetation as soon as I saw it. This fellow was thankfully quite inquisitive. For anyone that has stayed with Cara and I in Darwin these are the culprits for the odd scraping and screaming sounds we often hear in the night. This species does very well in and around Darwin but seems generally quite scarce in the Top End outside of cultivated areas, sadly they have become very scarce in central Australia.
